DeSmuME has had many improvements since v0.9.6 (which was 3 years ago), especially to the Mac version. The Mac version was rewritten from the ground up using Cocoa and features a native Mac user interface. In addition, performance has been greatly improved, using the latest emulation core built with Mac-specific optimizations. For Mac users: In the Emulation menu, choose Emulation Show Emulation Settings. Then in the Emulation Settings panel, select Dynamic Recompiler. To keep JIT as the default setting, click ‘Save Settings as Default’. The old.desmume.ini will be moved automatically with the name config but you have to move your saves manually.
